7:30 pm Welcome speech by HKETA Chairman Mr Victor Choi
7:35 pm Dinner starts
8:15 pm           Talk 1: Impacts of Artificial Intelligence on Jobs
by Dr. Stephen Cheung, VP with a private group in the Silicon Valley
Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers many technological promises and innovative applications.  Yet prominent figures such as Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk also worry about catastrophes in societies and economies such as tremendous job losses.  This talk looks at two major studies regarding what jobs are vulnerable and how.  What would developed economies become if most of human jobs have been displaced by AI?
Dr. Stephen W. Cheung is VP with a private group in the Silicon Valley.  He is a frequent speaker for HKETA and other events.
Educated in the US, his career began as a research scientist at Stanford University and later with Varian Medical Systems on radiation therapy systems—use of X-rays to treat cancers.  From 2007 to 2013, he was Director of Microwave Systems at Accuray Inc., a Silicon Valley company using robots to deliver radiation therapy. He was also principal investigator of special projects funded by the Dept. of Homeland Security, which resulted in a national award to Accuray in 2013. He holds 5 US patents and is author of two books in microwave technology.
Dr. Cheung worked in Hong Kong from mid-1990s to mid-2000s. He was general manager of the Electronics Division at the Hong Kong Productivity Council and later VP of a consumer electronics manufacturer overseeing new products.  He was consultant for the Hong Kong Science & Technology Park working in the US in 2017.
8:30pm            Talk 2: Do technology companies need patent protection?
by Dr. Jacqueline Lui, Eagle IP Limited
Patenting can be expensive and some companies seem to have done well without it. Yet others say that patenting is essential. So is it necessary and what can patenting do for a technology company? These issues will be explored and discussed.
8:45pm            Talk 3: Value of Empathy in Leadership
by Ms. Cindy Cheng, Consultant and founder, SoTi Consulting
Empathy is the ability to identify and understand others’ feelings and perspectives. It's our capacity to recognize the concerns other people have.
As a leader, that skill is obviously important. You cannot effectively lead someone you don't understand. You can only motivate and influence a person when you know how they feel.
There are numerous studies that link empathy to business results. It allows you to predict the effect your decisions and actions will have on core audiences and strategize accordingly.
Cindy is a seasoned hotelier and educator who has more than 20 years of hospitality experience in operations, event sales, marketing communications and human resources.
Cindy founded SoTi Consulting in 2018 and became a full time consultant on hospitality service, a facilitator on leadership skills and etiquette workshops and an organisational coach.
Her clients are not limited to hospitality industry but also in healthcare, government, universities and garment.
